What is a turret lathe?
A turret lathe is a type of lathe equipped with a turret head that holds several tools simultaneously. By rotating the turret, the right tool can be positioned quickly without having to manually reset the machine between each operation.
This design makes the machine type particularly effective in series production where several machining steps are to be performed in sequence on the same part.
Function and working principle
The workpiece is clamped and rotated while different cutting tools are fed in to process the material. Thanks to the turret, the machine can switch between, for example, turning, drilling, threading and parting off in a single clamping.
This reduces set-up times, increases repeatability and creates an efficient production flow - especially when manufacturing large volumes of identical components.
Areas of use
Turret lathes are used in several industrial sectors where precision and productivity are crucial:
-
Mechanical engineering - Manufacture of shafts, bushings and other precision rotating parts.
-
Automotive industry - Production of components with tight tolerances in high volumes.
-
Aerospace industry - Machining of parts that require high accuracy and process control.
-
Medical technology - Manufacturing small and complex components with very high precision requirements.
Advantages of turret lathes
Shorter transition time - Quick tool change via the turret head streamlines production.
High repeatability - Ideal for series production of identical parts.
More operations in the same clamp - Increases precision and reduces handling time.
Productivity - Adapted for rational production with high speed and consistent quality.
