More information

What is a lathe?

A lathe is a machine where the workpiece rotates around its own axis while a fixed tool processes the material. By clamping the part in a chuck and letting it rotate, you can cut, shape and dimension the surface with high precision.

Turning is used to produce cylindrical parts and components with precise dimensions, such as shafts, bushings, flanges and other rotating parts. The result is a finished part with controlled geometry and high surface finish.

Different types of lathes

There are several types of lathes adapted to different needs and production environments:

Manual lathes - Traditional machines where the operator controls movements and settings manually. A cost-effective and flexible option for small series, prototypes and training.

CNC lathes - Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines that are programmed to perform precise and repeatable machining operations. Suitable for series production and complex parts with high tolerance requirements.

Vertical lathes - The workpiece is positioned vertically, making them particularly suitable for large and heavy components. Provides good access and stable processing.

Horizontal lathes - The most common type where the workpiece is positioned horizontally. Used for a wide range of parts and offers high precision and versatility.

Multi-axis CNC lathes - Multi-axis machines that allow complex machining in multiple directions. Provides increased flexibility and the ability to produce advanced geometries in a single clamping.

The choice of lathe depends on the part design, material, production volume and automation requirements.

Lathes in modern industry

Lathes are a key part of the manufacturing industry and are used in sectors such as machinery manufacturing, automotive, energy, engineering and other technical industries. They enable efficient and precise processing of materials such as steel, aluminium, stainless steel, plastics and other alloys.

Safe and effective use requires the right skills, correct clamping and use of the machine in accordance with the manufacturer's safety instructions.
